ABOUT |
Letter from the Directors CircleWithin New York City, many Black and Latino youth grow up amidst horrific conditions. From an early age, they are exposed to violence, drugs, poverty, and racism. They often live in "war-torn" communities where manhood is defined by abusive power and respect is synonymous with fear. Girls are bombarded with negative images of femininity that have profound impacts on how they perceive themselves. Far too many youth face these conditions during a crucial stage of their development with little or none of the fundamental support they need. These conditions often undermine their confidence and aspirations and work against building a positive culture of brotherhood and sisterhood. Worse, they can draw youth into a self-destructive cycle of indifference, encouraging them to settle for mediocrity instead of reaching for excellence. We seek to counteract these influences by providing a safe space where our young brothers and sisters can come together to exchange knowledge, to vent their fears and pain and to develop a sense of commitment to each other. For many it is the first time they have encountered elders interested in their thoughts and opinions and who believe in them. For others, it's an additional and meaningful support. The Brotherhood/Sister Sol promotes educational achievement and enlightens youth about their history-a history that too often receives little attention in their school curriculum. We strive to help our young brothers and sisters develop a clear understanding of the world around them and to become individuals who take responsibility for their actions. We want our young brothers and sisters to recognize and respect the essential connection they have to each other so that they can work collectively to create social change.
