The Brotherhood/Sister Sol Awarded $1.1 million in Grants to Expand Programming

The Brotherhood/Sister Sol was recently awarded more than $1.1 million from four foundations to assist the organization in expanding its community center and spreading its educational model throughout the nation.

The contributions of these four foundations-- W.K. Kellogg , Ford , Nathan Cummings and Charles Hayden --are the result of an ambitious new fundraising strategy that will help the organization grow over the next five years. The grants will allow BHSS to expand its community space, conduct more trainings with educators, publish a book about how to teach creative writing and sustain core programs.

"We are very pleased that these leading national foundations are recognizing the value of our work," said Co-Director Khary Lazarre-White. "This money will have a big impact on our ability to sustain our work here in Harlem and to teach people throughout the nation about our methods."

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has provided BHSS with a two-year, $300,000 grant. The grant will support the Liberating Voices/Liberating Minds training institute. BHSS has now trained educators from Chicago, Harlem, the Bronx and Bermuda. The support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation will help the organization reach out to more educators and complete the fifth book in its publication series.

The Charles Hayden Foundation has provided BHSS with a $350,000 grant to support BHSS's general operations and the imminent physical expansion of its space. It will also pay for the services of the non-profit consulting firm, The Whelan Group. The Whelan Group has completed a comprehensive review of BHSS's fundraising efforts and assisted the organization in developing a five-year fundraising strategy.

The Ford Foundation has provided BHSS with a $300,000 for general operating support. This is the second year of support from Ford . Last year the directors of BHSS were awarded Ford's Leadership for a Changing World Award, which includes a two-year, $115,000 grant. Over the last two years we have received $515,000 in support from the Ford Foundation.

The Nathan Cummings Foundation has recently provided BHSS with a two-year, $150,000 grant to support Liberating Voices/Liberating Minds. It will also support the organization's art programs and the tri-annual newsletter.
